Firstly, thank you for your interest in continuing Christian education in the Kanawha Valley! With the closing of South Charleston Christian Academy at the end of the 2019-2020 school year, members of the staff, parents, and concerned community members banded together with the purpose of starting a new Christian school somewhere in the Kanawha Valley.
A temporary Board of Trustees was elected during the first meeting so that research on possible locations and means of incorporation could be pursued. The Board currently consists of:
Dr. Mark McDaniel – A well respected physician who currently owns and operates several clinics, is the Medical Director of St. Mary’s in Huntington, WV, and also serves on multiple boards. Dr. McDaniel is also a veteran of the US Air Force and currently serves in the WV National Guard as a state air surgeon.
Pastor Shawn Davis – Shawn Davis serves as the pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Clendenin, WV. A graduate of one of the first Christian schools in the area, Pastor Davis also chose to send his children to the same Christian school. He currently also serves as president of the West Virginia Family Foundation and owns his own contracting/plumbing company.
Evangelist Ron Hoy – Ron Hoy serves as the Assistant Pastor at Esta Memorial Baptist Church in Witcher Creek, WV. While his children were home-schooled, he recognizes the value of Christian education to families who are unable to do the same. Bro. Ron has served in various ministries involving children and is also an accomplished contractor and bladesmith.
Mr. Christopher Davis – Chris Davis serves as the current principal of South Charleston Christian Academy. Since graduating college with his degree in accounting and a minor in communications and strategic marketing, Mr. Davis has held positions that utilize those skills until he felt the Lord’s call to enter ministry in Christian education in 2017.
Since the election of the board on March 2nd, talks have been entered with real estate agents, the Kanawha County Board of Education, Kanawha Valley Senior Services, and the pastor of another local church in hopes of finding facilities that could serve as a home for the new Christian school. Several promising options have been presented, and we ask for prayer that the Lord would lead us in the right direction for this new work.
In addition, we would like to hear from you as to what the new school should be called! The poll below includes a couple of suggestions that have been received, and should also allow you to enter your own.
Another development over the past couple days has been the donation of school desks and some other furniture items to the school by the mayor and city council of Smithers, WV. The desks were originally located in Valley High School, which has been consolidated with another local school and the desks were moved into an abandoned elementary gymnasium which is scheduled to be demolished – with the desks inside. Many of the desks are in very good condition (having been purchased by the school in the prior year), and would cost approximately $200 each if purchased new.
Around 115 of these desks have since been picked up and moved to a storage unit in Belle thanks to Ron Hoy, James Bowles, and Kim Bowles! If the current school is willing to allow us to take the desks with us, we can swap out desks in need of repair or that are in rough shape with these new desks. If we are not allowed to take the desks with us, these will be a foundation to build upon.
We have had several families ask what they can do to help us as we proceed. The thing we covet most at this point is prayer. Pray that God will continue to open doors that he wishes us to pass through and close the doors that are not in His will. Pray that he will continue to supply for those families who are attending SCCA as we finish out the year, and that he will soften their hearts toward this new work.
Should anyone wish to donate financially to the new school, we ask that you pray about using it to finish the work at SCCA first (as many of our tentative staff are still employed there and will likely receive no compensation over the summer months as we continue making arrangements for the new school). If God, however, should still lead you to help support us, feel free to send us an e-mail via our contact page. May God bless you and your families as you continue to seek His will for the education of your children!
– Mr. Davis
